What is E969?
Advantame is an artificial sweetener structurally related to aspartame and neotame, but even more potent, roughly 20,000 times sweeter than sucrose. It is highly heat-stable and, because it does not release significant free phenylalanine during metabolism, does not require a phenylalanine warning for people with PKU. The FDA and EFSA consider it safe within established acceptable daily intake levels.
Also appears on labels as: Advantame, E969, E 969, E-969, N-[N-[3-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)propyl]-α-aspartyl]-L-phenylalanine 1-methyl ester, Aspartame-vanillin derivative, Aspartame derivative sweetener, Artificial sweetener E969, High-intensity sweetener advantame, Advantame sweetener, INS 969, Advantamas.
What the evidence says
- Generally recognized as safe at typical use levels; as one of the newer approved sweeteners, long-term real-world usage data are more limited than for older sweeteners.
- Contains an aspartame-related structure, so extremely sensitive individuals who react to aspartame derivatives may wish to be cautious, though advantame itself is not classified as an allergen.
